Do You Want To Be A Writer?

I am an author and I am just 25.

I have written a novel called ‘ Yours Truly, Secret Santa’ and successfully got it published recently.

Was it easy?

Not at all, in fact it was utterly and ridiculously brutal. Writing is never easy. You create it and it mocks you. It pulls you and the moment you realize that you are almost there it will push you. Writing is a solitary and lonely experience. One mostly remains remote somewhere probably lost in their own head. Just the way Lucy finds a wardrobe that transports her to a magical world of Narnia in the ‘Chronicles of Narnia’, similarly writers get transported to some other cosmic world the moment they sit in front of their laptops. I pretty much had the same experience. No one around me succeeded in coming any close to that magical kingdom I was in, they knew nothing about what I did there and what I got out of it. After hours and days of doubts and self-deprecating throughout exploring the new land, I finally found the treasure I was looking for. That treasure is ‘redemption’.

Every once in a while you decide to finally do something you love, all your long lost rational senses will come forth and strike again with one question, is it worth, it? When I found my treasure I said to my self, ‘ Yes it is worth it.’

In this blog I will tell you everything about writer’s block and how you can overcome it.

Here are few hardest realizations that I have inevitably encountered as a writer;

  • You doubt your capacities every minute and every second:   Self-doubting is a natural experience so let it come try not to cling to it and believe in one thing, you will only be a writer if you tell yourself you are.
  • Words never come out the way they sound in your head:  Don’t worry if your hunt for appropriate words is extremely difficult. It might be the same for any published or literary author living elsewhere. Do some research, read more books and use dictionary if need be but don’t depreciate yourself just on the bases of lack of vocabulary because that is not something inbuilt its more of a process of acquiring that comes with practice and in time.
  • Editors can be the worst nightmare you ever had:   Yes it is true, you may see a complete new piece of writing when it comes back to you from your editor’s desk leaving you startled of what just happened here, you will perhaps feel that your writing must be rubbish or you might be far bellow and inferior to your editor’s amount of expertise and intellectual that lead your work a complete restructuring. Don’t worry cleaning and polishing is a part of process. If you feel that your editor’s work does not resonate to your self and sense of creation be blunt and say no. Your piece of writing is your work and you have all rights to accept and reject all the suggestions and advices that come your way.
  • Finding a publisher can be a lifelong task:   Yes it is indeed true. You may find a groom or a bride sooner if you seek one but publishers are extremely difficult to get a hand on. But again my friend, ‘HAKUNA MATATA’ (Don’t worry be happy) as long as you are trying there is a possibility. For new writers especially struggle is real, I don’t deny to that fact but mark my words it is worth all attempts so I suggest not to give up.
  • Even though you try your best your creativity may remain absent for a long period of time:   Free your creative cupid and it will come back to you more often. If you try to confine it, you surly would lose it more. Meanwhile keep writing because creative cupid needs a warm and comfortable house to crash in and if you build one for it, you know never know it may forever be your guest.

Writing is an art and just like every other art it needs to be fed with love, passion and obsession at times so don’t worry if your heart says that this is a good investment because believe me it is. Free yourself from all the fears you have as writer, make mistakes, fly in your imagination, create a world dwell there for as long as you want and trust me one day you will realize that writing is more of a vocation than profession.
